Ras Al Khaimah has launched a comprehensive autonomous mobility framework together with a dedicated zone for testing self-driving vehicles, a move positioning the emirate among the region's frontrunners in transport technology.

The initiative was jointly introduced by the RAK Transport Authority (Rakta) and RAK Properties. The launch ceremony took place on Thursday evening at the InterContinental Ras Al Khaimah Mina Al Arab Resort & Spa, with Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, in attendance.

During the event, ten partnership agreements were signed with government entities, specialised companies, universities and research institutions, laying the technical and regulatory groundwork needed to expand autonomous vehicle use across the emirate. The newly established testing zone will serve as a controlled environment to evaluate the safety and efficiency of self-driving vehicles before any wider rollout on public roads.

Ras Al Khaimah had already been building toward this step through earlier trials: autonomous Robobus vehicles have been operating on Al Marjan Island, while Robotaxi testing has been expanding in the Al Dhait South area.

Among the attendees were Zeng Jixin, China's ambassador to the UAE, and Ou Boqian, China's consul general in Dubai and the Northern Emirates — a presence reflecting growing interest from Chinese investors and technology firms in the emirate's mobility ambitions.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr said: "People are at the heart of our vision for the future of Ras Al Khaimah, and the ultimate purpose of every advancement we seek to achieve is to make a tangible difference in people's lives."

Officials describe the initiative as part of a broader push to position Ras Al Khaimah as a regional hub for smart transport technology. Combined with the earlier Robobus and Robotaxi trials, the formal testing zone and the new partnership agreements mark a more concrete, operational phase for autonomous mobility in the emirate.
